Who is Jose?

“A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself”

ghytyutuytuJose Protacio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda commonly known as Jose Rizal is an epitome of nationalism, intelligence, and martyrdom. The best model for every Filipinos for exhibiting such loyalty and love for the country.

The life story of Jose Rizal is truly inspiring. His life is indeed one for the books, he is not just an ordinary Filipino but a very intelligent and talented one who is ready to sacrifice his whole life just to give freedom and peace to his family and countrymen.

Jose Rizal was a man of incredible intellectual power with an amazing artistic talent as well. He excelled at anything that he put his mind to – medicine, poetry, sketching, architecture, sociology, and a lot more! As a child, I would always look up to him and even until now, calls him “Jack of all trades, master of all.” Can you blame me? He is just amazing as that if I were to believe the historians.jp-rizal

Jose Rizal is a man with so many accomplishments. And influence us in all the things we do. He inspires us to be hardworking and diligent, which most of us (yes, including me) are not anymore or at times at least.

He truly was a man of action, he did not only looked over the people nor just tell people what to do, but instead he helped them in their everyday work. Rizal was intelligent and yet very humble.

And today the people of the Philippines honor him as the National Hero. Jose Rizal is remembered throughout the Philippines for his brilliance, courage, acts of peace and his compassion. As he is most known for fighting against the colonizers through his writings which has subject of cruelty and unfairness of the foreign leaders during his time. Most of the schools in the Philippines study his literary work, a poem called Mi Utimo Adios (My Last Goodbye) as well as his two famous novels as written below:

ngfjyh.jpgNoli Me Tangere is the most famous novel of Jose Rizal. He finished writing it in December of 1889 and was later published in Berlin. The novel “Noli Me Tangere” translates to “Touch Me Not” and refers to John 20:17 in the Bible where Magdalene tried to touch the newly risen Jesus, He said “Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father” And Rizal found a timely and effective gesture to dedicate this novel to the people of his country whose experiences and sufferings were written by Rizal, sufferings which he brought to light in an effort to awaken his coRizal-Art-Writing.jpguntrymen to the truths that had long remained unspoken, although not totally unheard of.

0.jpggtfrytry.jpgEl Filibusterismo is Rizal’s second novel. It was written as the effect of his ‘Noli Me Tangere’ to his countrymen ignited the fire of patriotism. The second novel, commonly nicknamed ‘El Fili’ or simply ‘Fili’, was also written in Spanish. It is also known for its English alternative, ‘The Reign of Greed.’ El Filibusterismo was written in dedication to the three martyred priests Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos and Jacinto Zamora whose deaths left a memorable mark on his mind. The three were executed because of their alleged participation in the first revolutionary campaign for Modern Philippine Nationalism, The Mutiny of Cavite. Like Noli Me Tangere, El Filibusterismo aims to enlighten the society and bring the Filipinos closer to the truth. And in this novel all the reader will feel bitterness and hatred towards the system as the romance and aspirations that were narrated on Noli are all gone. Even the characters’ personalities seem to have undergone radical change. This is how different Rizal’s second novel is.

What is the significance of Rizal’s life to the Filipino society?

Leading a bloodless revolution using his pen to fight the colonizers, proving that he is more to the big brain that he is and emphasizing his big heart for the country as well.

“The youth is the hope of our nation” -Jose Rizal.
